Tagetes africana is liable to produce some poorly filled specimens, and some double varieties of carnations are offered for sale with the note that the seed yields only 80% of doubles.
It is probably that of a related plant which resembles tarragon in everything except flavor which is absent! Tagetes lucida, which may be used as a substitute for true tarragon, is easily propagated by seed and can be procured from seedsmen under its own name.
A very well-known instance is that of the dwarf variety of Tagetes signata, which arose in the nursery of Vilmorin in the year 1860. It was observed for the first time in a single individual among a lot of the ordinary Tagetes signata. It was found impossible to isolate it, but the seeds were saved separately.
