Naturally enough, the criticisms of the syndicalists are leveled chiefly against political action, parliamentarism, and Statism. It is Professor Arturo Labriola, the brilliant leader of the Italian syndicalists, who has voiced perhaps most concretely these strictures against socialism, although they abound in all syndicalist writings.
Such, for example, are the progress of ``statism, the diminution of the power of the bourgeoisie, the increasing activity of financiers, the conflict of the classes, the vanishing of the old social constraints, and the degradation of morality. All these effects are displayed in a general insubordination and anarchy.
When he declares that they confuse their socialism with Statism, he might equally well argue that socialists confuse their socialism with monopoly or with the aggregation of capital in the hands of the few. Because socialists recognize the inevitable evolution toward monopoly is no reason for believing that they advocate monopoly.
These measures provoked a reaction in favour of Statism, and the conservatives obtained an overwhelming majority in the elections held in December. In order to appease the scruples of the French moderates, the Jacobins endeavoured to provoke manifestations in favour of annexation in the Belgian provinces. A regular propaganda was organized by the Clubs.
Statism is the real political system of the Latin peoples, and the only system that receives all suffrages. The other forms of government republic, monarchy, empire represent empty labels, powerless shadows. Gradual Propagation of Democratic Ideas after the Revolution. Ideas which are firmly established, incrusted, as it were, in men's minds, continue to act for several generations.
