At least, that is how I regard it. The over-cultivation of physical strength leads to mental callousness and brutality. These are scientific points which require discussion, not with you, but with a scientist. Nothing should be overdone. Too much enervation and lack of athleticism leads to moral deterioration certainly, but so does too much 'sport' as they call it.

And thus the modern houses, which men had sought to render fruitful, the useless, over-huge houses, swollen with hereditary ambition, had been unable to attain maturity, and remained there sterile like dry bushes on a plot of land exhausted by over-cultivation.

A prevailing idea though over-cultivation exhausts its organic correlate, and leads to defective nutrition of that part in the offspring. Hence they do not pursue the same idea as their fathers, but revert to a remoter ancestral historic idea, the organic correlate of which has lain fallow, thus gained strength.

It is popularly ascribed to the over-cultivation of the race, as plants and animals highly civilised that is, greatly modified and bred to an artificial excellence by human agency are certainly delicate, unprolific, and especially difficult to rear. There is little disease in the nurseries, but there is little health and a deficiency of nervous energy.
