The golden age of Grecian eloquence is embraced in a period of one hundred and thirty years from the time of Pericles, and during this period Athens bore the palm alone. Of the many Athenian orators the most distinguished were Lys'ias, Isoc'rates, AEschines, and Demosthenes. The first was born about 435 B.C., and was admired for the perspicuity, purity, sweetness, and delicacy of his style.
But the high respect with which he is always spoken of by three men in successive ages, Thucydides, Xenophon, and Isoc'rates, all friendly to the aristocratical interest, and all anxious for concord with Lacedaemon, strongly indicates that what may appear exceptionable in his conduct was, in their opinion, the result, not of choice, but of necessity.
