She was only fifty-two when she died in 1699, and the chief records of her life are found in St. Evremond's writings. He, her faithful admirer to the end, was buried in Westminster Abbey. A near neighbour of the Duchess's was Mrs. Mary Astell, one of the early pioneers in the movement for the education for women.
The disjointed pieces of which Saint Evremond's writings consist are tedious and superficial, but they reveal a mind of much cultivation and considerable common sense.
