Brown-Sequard, in his address before the Medical Faculty of Paris in 1869, was the first to suggest that glands, with or without ducts, supplied special substances to the blood which were useful or necessary to the normal health, and in 1889 at a meeting of the Societe de Biologie he described the experiment he had made upon himself by the injection of testicular extract.

Bichat assumed the existence of a special group of "physiological" sciences. Lamarck, in a work published in 1801, for the first time made use of the name "Biologie" from the two Greek words which signify a discourse upon life and living things.

Reinke, Professor of Botany in Kiel, has set forth his views in his book, “Die Welt als Tat,” and more recently in hisEinleitung in die theoretische Biologie” . Both books are addressed to a wide circle of readers.

The "Biologie" and the "Philosophie Zoologique" are both very remarkable productions, and are still worthy of attentive study, but they fell upon evil times.

It was an interesting coincidence that Treviranus should have published the first volume of his Biologie, oder Philosophie der lebenden Natur, in which his views on the transmutation of species were expounded, in 1802, the same twelvemonth in which Lamarck's first exposition of the same doctrine appeared in his Recherches sur l'Organisation des Corps Vivants.
