There can be no doubt but that all the medicinal virtues possessed by similar springs in Europe and America are found in these of New Zealand. Ohinemutu is the most typical home of the natives, and for ages has formed the chief settlement of the Arawa tribe.

A thousand fell in the fight; then the women and children were slaughtered in heaps. The strong tribe of the Arawa further south had their chief pah on an island in the middle of Lake Rotorua. Hongi with great labour carried his canoes over to the lake.

Famous fighting men, the Waikato chiefs had died bravely, despite the amazement caused by the mystery of firearms. One had killed four Ngapuhi before he was shot. Another of Hongi's triumphs was at Rotorua in the Hot Lakes district the land of the Arawa tribe.

The date of the immigration is supposed to be the fifteenth century. Each canoe's crew settled in different parts of the North Island, and were the founders of the different great tribes into which the New Zealanders were divided. The more celebrated canoes were the Arawa, Tainui, Aotea, Kuruhaupo, Takitumu, and others. The Arawa claimed the first landing, and the principal idols came in her.

One of these is now in the possession of Sir George Grey. A large tribe on the east coast still bears the name of Arawa, and her name, that of the Tainui, and other of the canoes, are now borne by some of the great steamships that run to New Zealand. Cook, in the voyage with which we have to deal, completely examined the whole group.
