De tekst van de in Churchill's Collection of Voyages and Travels, Vol IV opgenomen Engelsche vertaling is herdrukt in Transactions of the Korea Branch of the R.A.S. Vol. 9 alleen met een "Foreword" van den President Mark Napier Trollope, Bishop in Corea, die over Hamel's Journaal zeer gunstig oordeelt maar de opmerking maakt: "there are points, like his circumstantial account of the man-eating "crocodils" to be found in Chosen, which sound rather like a "traveller's tale", though it is possible that such animals may have existed two hundred and fifty years ago and yet be extinct now". Hamel gaat echter vrij uit; over krokodillen komt in zijn Journaal evenmin iets voor als over olifanten.
't Is dus voornamelijk de onschuld, die in aanmerking komt. Voor den kooper wordt op verlangen een geneeskundig certificaat opgemaakt om de maagdelijkheid te constateeren. De Pall Mall Gazette van 1885 meldt eenige getuigenissen: June 27, 1885 «This is to certify, that I have this day examined D aged 16 years and have found her a virgin." June 29, 1885.
«This is to certify, that I have examined W aged 17 years, and K aged 17 years, and have found them both virgins."
