It was of a golden green colour on the upper parts, with a dull brown below; and it had a curious tuft hanging from its chin, of a light green at the base, and purple-red towards the points. The wings and tail were of a purple-brown hue, while the under part of the tail was of brown-yellow. High up on the hills he found another beautiful little bird which he called the "white-booted racket-tail."
The Mayor's son, especially, who might be supposed to fare as well as any little boy in the city, had been in the school any number of times. There was one little boy in the city, however, whom the white-booted police had not yet found any occasion to arrest, though one might have thought he had more reason than a good many others to complain of his lot in life.
The rapid flying white-booted racket-tail is likewise common near Santa Fe. It possesses muffs, like the former, and is found at an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet. It is named from the long, racket-shaped feathers of the tail, which, when flying, are in constant motion, waving softly in the air, opening and closing in the most beautiful manner.
