It is said that a Brahmana's duty consists in studying the Vedas and seeking the welfare of the human race; that a Kshatriya's duty consists in protecting men, and that a Vaisya's in promoting their material prosperity. A Vaisya lives by distributing the fruits of his own acts and agriculture.
Anything else that he will do will be regarded as improper for him. I shall tell thee what the Vaisya's profession is and how he is to earn the means of his sustenance. A seventh also is his share in the profits arising from the trade in horns, but he should take a sixteenth if the trade be in hoofs.
The girdle of a Brahmana should be made of Munja grass. That for one belonging to the royal order should be a bowstring. The Vaisya's girdle should be made of the Valwaji grass. Even this is what has been laid down in the scriptures. Listen now to me as I expound to thee what constitutes the merits and faults of both givers and recipients of gifts.
