The sun might go down upon a kind of wrath, but it rose on hearts with the difference forgotten. Their very unlikenesses pricked each on to seek himself in the other. They were going to Edinburgh after Christmas, to be students there, to grow to be men. Here at home, upon the eve of their going, rein upon them was slackened.
This inattention will, it is obvious, be greatest in the poetic attribution of life and personality to natural objects, in so far as this approximates to a complete momentary illusion. To see a dark overhanging rock as a grim sombre human presence, is for the moment to view it under this aspect only, abstracting from its many obvious unlikenesses.
As the result, therefore, of our analysis, we obtain the following as an enumeration and classification of all Namable Things: 1st. Feelings, or States of Consciousness. 2d. The Minds which experience those feelings. 3d. 4th, and last. The Successions and Co-existences, the Likenesses and Unlikenesses, between feelings or states of consciousness.
Just as a concavity will fit into a convexity, for the very reason that it is concave and not convex, so the human unlikenesses, which are correspondent to God, are the characteristics by which it becomes possible that we should cleave to Him and inhere in Him.
