W. H. Hudson, gives the following enthusiastic description of the little tobogganist of his native woodlands: "When I see him sitting quite still for a few moments on a branch of a tree in his most characteristic nuthatch attitude, on or under the branch, perched horizontally or vertically, with head or tail uppermost, but always with the body placed beetle-wise against the bark, head raised, and the straight, sharp bill pointed like an arm lifted to denote attention, at such times he looks less like a living than a sculptured bird, a bird cut out of beautifully variegated marble blue-gray, buff, and chestnut, and placed against the tree to deceive the eye.
Certainly Ferry was an accomplished tobogganist, for he steered with great skill over a somewhat complicated course, including excursions between trees set rather closely together, over hummocks and through erratic dips, at a pace which quite took his passengers' breath away. "It's the best fun I ever had in my life," cried Sally, as they climbed the hill for the third time.
The toboggan is to the hurlie what the sled is to the carriage; it is a hurlie upon runners; and if for a grating road you substitute a long declivity of beaten snow, you can imagine the giddy career of the tobogganist. The correct position is to sit; but the fantastic will sometimes sit hind-foremost, or dare the descent upon their belly or their back.
