In the Earl of Leicester's journal, under date Thursday, July 8th, 1652, we find: "My daughter Spencer was married to Sir Robert Smith at Penshurst, my wife being present with my daughters Strangford, and Lacy Pelham, Algernon and Robin Sydney, etc.; but I was in London." From this we may imagine the Earl did not greatly approve the match.
"Great care was taken to prevent us eating too ravenously at first: we received every kindness our weak condition required; but, notwithstanding these precautions, two of my companions in misery died before we reached Ireland. "When we arrived at Strangford, in the north of Ireland, I was entirely destitute I had lost everything I possessed.
A great pity it was, that in addition to all these honours, that admirer of Portuguese literature, Viscount Strangford, of Great Britain who, I believe, once went out Ambassador Extraordinary to the Brazils it was a pity that he was not present on this occasion, to yield his tribute of "A Stanza to Braganza!"
