Bourdon made some engravings, and collectors prize his plates very much. There were other French painters who studied in Italy, but those that I have mentioned are the important ones. His most important works are in the Louvre. His father was a sculptor, and was employed by the Chancellor Segnier.
Charles le Brun was born in Paris, in 1619. He was trained to be a painter, and went young to Rome, studying there for six years under the guidance of Nicolas Poussin. Le Brun returned to Paris, and, through the patronage of the Chancellor Segnier, was introduced to the court, and got the most favourable opportunities of practising his profession with worldly success.
By the interest of Raoul, many valuable collections of paintings, including the unique one of Segnier, were opened to him.
