How thankful we may be that in England we have no equivalent to the German 'Pfaffe, which, identical with 'papa' and 'pope, and a name given at first to any priest, now carries with it the insinuation of almost every unworthiness in the forms of meanness, servility, and avarice which can render the priest's office and person base and contemptible.
