"Michtam" and "Maschil" are also musical notes, indicating the time of the melody, metronome-marks, so to speak; and "Gittith" and "Shiggaion" are marks that indicate the kind of melody to which the psalm is to be sung. "Negiloth" means stringed instruments; it indicates the kind of accompaniment with which the psalm was to be sung.
