The 'land' stood in the narrowest part of the wynd; right opposite, and not more than five feet away rose the opposite wall, finishing off into a gable end with corbie-steps affording easy access to the further roof. Could 'Brownie' have leaped across? It was not impossible, as the space was so narrow, and though the window was small there was room to pass through.
And so severely consistent is the impression of age, that down on the sunlit quay, flanked by the lofty warehouses, the slope of whose roofs is masked by corbie-steps, you are surprised not to see riding at anchor the high-prowed galleons of the seventeenth century. And, best of all, there is the quiet, simple Church of St John's, English in feeling as in origin.
