We had a paper wherein was a melancholy account of the barbarous treatment of American prisoners, taken at Ticonderoga. "Sept. 16th. Today about twenty old countrymen petitioned the Board for permission to go on board His Majesty's ships. "Jan. 7th. 1778. 289 prisoners here in Plymouth. In Portsmouth there are 140 prisoners. Today the prison was smoked with charcoal and brim-stone."
They sent the dogs into the cave where the wolf was. But the wolf bit the dogs, and drove them out again. Then the men put a pile of straw in the mouth of the cave. They set the straw on fire. It filled the cave with smoke. But Mrs. Wolf did not come out. Then they burned brim-stone in the cave. It must have made the wolf sneeze. But the cave was deep.
They tell me there's some parts where hell's treated as played-out where our ministers don't like to talk much about it because people don't want to hear about it. Such preachers ought to be put out. They ain't Methodists at all. What we want here, sir, is straight-out, flat-footed hell the burnin' lake o' fire an' brim-stone. Pour it into 'em, hot an' strong. We can't have too much of it.
