I saw a collection of scarabaei, or beetles, which were anciently worshiped in this country. Dealers offer figures of this kind for sale, but the most of them are probably manufactured for the tourist trade. On Lord's day, October thirtieth, I attended the evening services at the American Mission, and went to Bedrashen the following day.
On the last day of our sail the donkeys of Bedrashen were called into service for a ride through the palm forest and green fields, past the fallen columns of Ramses, to Sakkara, the tombs of the sacred bulls, and the pictured tombs of Ptahhotep and Ti.
He had started from Cairo in the morning on a coastguard camel, coming quickly along the camel route between Bedrashen and Tomieh, and the extra few miles to our encampment. Before we arrived he had sent the camel back with the mounted Arab who accompanied him; and somehow the camp seemed all the smarter and more ship-shape for the presence of the handsome Hadji, in his green turban.
The carving is exquisitely wrought, while the various animals depicted wild fowl, buffaloes, antelopes, or geese are perfect in drawing and true in action. Close to Sakkara are the dense palm-groves of Bedrashen, which surround and cover the site of ancient Memphis.
