If we recognize no such Standard our development of spiritual powers, our discovery of the immense possibilities hidden in the inner laws of Nature and of our own being, can only become a scourge to ourselves and others, and it is for this reason that these secrets are so jealously guarded by those who know them, and that over the entrance to the temple are written the words "Eskato Bebeloi" "Hence ye Profane."
The human tragedy thus portrayed was the luminous counterpart of the dark dramas that Athens beheld. There, in the theatre which itself was a church with the stage for pulpit man, blinded by passions, the Fates pursued and Destiny felled. The sombre spectacle was inexplicable.
