Or, rather, happy he who, in the repose of the middle classes of society, places between indigence and affluence, far from the courts of the great, having neither poverty nor riches according to Agur's wish, can in retirement and quietness see life sweetly glide away, and make salvation, if not the sole, yet his principal, concern.

'Give me neither poverty nor riches, was Agur's prayer; 'feed me with food convenient for me, lest I be full and deny Thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor and steal. And there are many things flatteries, disgraceful humiliations, hypocrisies which are almost as bad as stealing.

The golden mean of Agur's perfect prayer is, perhaps, the best lot of all, did we but know it: "Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me."

At the very most Agur's prayer would have been mine: 'Give me neither poverty nor riches. But it's quite true that riches bring 'temptations' and are a 'snare, whether people 'will' be rich or become rich against their will; and I must be on the watch.

And, except in the poor parish of which I, Armand De Rancé, am pastor, and some few wealthy families like the Eustises, Agur's wise and noble prayer has been in part granted to us; for if it has not been possible to remove far from us all vanity and lies, yet we have been given neither poverty nor riches, and we are fed with food convenient for us.
