The only native tongue spoken by European residents at Bathurst is the Wolof. It is still said that no one will speak Wolof like him, the result of the new regime of compulsory French instruction.
In 1850 M. L’Abbe Arlabosse founded a mission at Galam, 150 leagues in the interior of Senegal. Another mission was successfully established at Grand Bassam, in 1851. The printing press, already referred to, has contributed powerfully to facilitate missionary work. Seven diverse languages are now taught, viz.: Wolof, Serer, Saracole, Abule, Mpongue, Bingue and Balu, or Boulou.
