In the Staphylinidae, the horns of the males are extraordinarily variable in the same species, just as we have seen with the Lamellicorns. In Siagonium we have a case of dimorphism, for the males can be divided into two sets, differing greatly in the size of their bodies and in the development of their horns, without intermediate gradations.
Of moths, Noctuae and Geometrae abounded, with many flies and Tipulae. Hymenoptera were scarce, except a yellow Ophion, which lays its eggs in the caterpillars above-mentioned. A large Telephora was very common, and had the usual propensity of its congeners for blood; lamellicorns were also abundant.
I think all classes of beetles had suffered. Many fine lamellicorns, that were generally numerous, were not seen at all; neither were many species of longicorns, usually common. Butterflies were also scarce, but it was the second season that they had been so. Some ants were affected; in others, such as the leaf-cutter, I noted no perceptible diminution in number.
We may reasonably suspect that the males originally bore horns and transferred them to the females in a rudimentary condition, as in so many other Lamellicorns.
These exquisite colours are not confined to one order, and some of the Elateridæ and Lamellicorns exhibit hues of green and blue, that rival the deepest tints of the emerald and sapphire. In the same work is figured another species of large size, also from Ceylon, this is the Alaus sordidus. Scavenger Beetles.
