The account sounds trustworthy, especially that about the Bible: it is exactly what the poor fellow would have done.

He was deposed, his house sacked, some of his cabinet officers tried before a court of impeachment, and he himself was drowned as he was pursued while attempting to escape to a British ship in the harbor. His efforts were mainly devoted to restoring order and confidence, though there was a new war with the Greboes to be waged.

He served very efficiently as Governor of Maryland from 1836 to 1851, especially exerting himself to standardize the currency and to stabilize the revenues. Five years after his death Maryland suffered greatly from an attack by the Greboes, twenty-six colonists being killed.
