But among the younger writers there are some who show little French influence, or none at all. Thus we find that in 1585 Spain had a divided drama, represented on the one side by the drama of reason and proportion fashioned after Greek and Roman models, and on the other a loosely joined, irregular, romantic drama of adventure and intrigue, such as was demanded by the Spanish temperament.
Gutiérrez has not kept the classic unities of time and place, but he has kept the one important unity, that of action; since, although our interest may at times be divided between the protagonists of the drama and a less important character, we never lose interest in the former. The characters, although well drawn, are not strong.
