Burner was Berry and Lincoln's clerk. He lived at New Salem from 1829 to 1834. Lincoln for many months lodged with his father, Isaac Burner, and he and Lincoln slept in the same bed. From a photograph in the possession of the Hon. W.J. Orendorff, of Canton, Illinois.
Logan Hay, on John McLean; General Alfred Orendorff, on Nathaniel Pope; and the portraits were accepted in the name of the Court at Springfield by the Hon. J. Otis Humphrey, the District Judge. There was a very distinguished gathering of lawyers, of Federal and State judges from Illinois and adjacent States, and of many members of the families of the deceased jurists.
At the session of the Legislature at Vandalia in the winter of 1830-31, a petition borne to the State capital by Thomas Orendorff and James Latta was duly presented, praying for the organization of a new county to be taken from Tazewell and Vermilion.
