When Corneille de Witt in January, 1672, had come to van Baerle, and, in the supposed secrecy of the drying-room, confided to his godson the state correspondence, Boxtel, telescope in hand, watched attentively all the movements. He saw the mysterious package pass from the hands of de Witt to those of van Baerle who enclosed it carefully in the drawer where he kept his best tulip bulbs.
Boxtel, disguised as a burgher of the Hague, had made friends with the executioner, and hoped to get the tulip bulbs after the execution of van Baerle, but the commutation of the sentence again frustrated his plans, and, thinking Cornelius had the bulbs on his person, he decided to follow the prisoner.
Before him lay three bulbs which he was sure would produce the long-sought black tulip.
With a telescope he watched the garden and the glass-covered drying-room where van Baerle kept his bulbs and records. Van Baerle, absorbed in his work, was utterly ignorant of the hatred of his envious neighbor.
