Burke, with a retrospect to the sweets of office which showed that he had not wholly left hope behind, endeavored to open a negotiation through the medium of Lord John, for the purpose of procuring, by some arrangement, either for himself or his son, a Tellership then in the possession of a relative of Lord Orford.
In 1656, he appeared in Cromwell's Parliament, as member for Haddington, and secured for himself a plurality of offices, which combined a tellership of the Exchequer, with the captaincy of a troop of horse.
"The tellership that you wanted a Canadian for," he asked, "didn't you say that you have a man already?" "Yes," said the manager, "a brilliant young fellow from Toronto; his name is Tomlinson, I have his credentials here a first-class man. I've wired him to come right along, at our expense, and we'll keep the job open for him ten days."
Lord Macclesfield had a special salary of £4000 per annum, during his occupancy of the marble chair, and obtained a grant of £12,000 from the king; a tellership in the Exchequer being also bestowed upon his eldest son.
