There yet remain for publication Thoreau's adventures on Cape Cod; his few public addresses on passing events, especially those on the Burns Rescue and the John-Brown affair, which were certainly among the very ablest productions called forth by those exciting occasions; his poems; and his private letters to his friend Blake, of Worcester, and to others, letters which certainly contain some of his toughest, and perhaps also some of his finest writing.
I can trace it no farther back than Nat Turner's time, when it was published in the Albany "Evening Journal"; thence transferred to the "Liberator" of September 17th, 1831, and many other newspapers; then refuted in detail by the "Richmond Enquirer" of October 21st; then resuscitated in the John-Brown epoch by the Philadelphia "Press," and extensively copied.

The wonder is that the knives and forks are not made to correspond in length with the repasts, in which case the latter would be pitchforks, and the former John-Brown pikes. The people of Washington are as various, mixed, dissimilar, and contrasted as the edifices they inhabit.
