In Devadatta's case we connect all attributes with one person, because we know his unity through other means of knowledge; otherwise the distinctive power of several attributes would lead us, in this case also, to the assumption of several substances to which the several attributes belong.

Yet the same treatise is copious and lucid in dealing with monastic rules, and the sayings recorded have an air of authenticity.
