La rue Sainte-Avoye avait pris son nom d'un couvent fondé en 1228, en l'honneur de sainte Hedwige ou Avoye, et qui fut occupé, en 1623, par des Ursulines. Ce couvent (n° 47), aujourd'hui détruit, a servi de temple israélite sous l'Empire. Dans cette rue étaient: 1° L'hôtel de Mesmes, bâti par le connétable de Montmorency, et où il vint mourir en 1567, après la bataille de Saint-Denis. Henri II y séjourna quelquefois.
