Der Heizer klopfte respektvoll an der Türe an und forderte, als man »herein« rief, Karl mit einer Handbewegung auf, ohne Furcht einzutreten. Er trat auch ein, aber blieb an der Türe stehen. Vor den drei Fenstern des Zimmers sah er die Wellen des Meeres und bei Betrachtung ihrer fröhlichen Bewegung schlug ihm das Herz, als hätte er nicht fünf lange Tage das Meer ununterbrochen gesehen. Große Schiffe kreuzten gegenseitig ihre Wege und gaben dem Wellenschlag nur soweit nach als es ihre Schwere erlaubte. Auf ihren Masten trugen sie schmale, aber lange Flaggen, die zwar durch die Fahrt gestrafft wurden, trotzdem aber noch hin- und herzappelten. Wahrscheinlich von Kriegsschiffen her erklangen Salutschüsse, die Kanonenrohre eines solchen nicht allzuweit vorüberfahrenden Schiffes, strahlend mit dem Reflex ihres Stahlmantels, waren wie gehätschelt von der sicheren, glatten und doch nicht wagrechten Fahrt.
