Several subject-states of green and yellow parrots constituted our colonial neighbours. We talked nevertheless in our legislative assemblies of our happy constitution, which by tacit agreement we understood to mean "happy for ourselves;" but the green and yellow parrots too plainly showed a strong disposition to put another interpretation on the phraseology.
Such states are "dependencies," "dominions," "subject-states," or more accurately "slave-states," or more accurately still, not states at all, but mere aggregations of slave-individuals.
