On the tiny holdings, which were all that the poorest could afford, the scanty returns might be eked out by labour on the fields of others, for the small allotment did not demand the undivided energies of its holder. There was besides a class of politores similar to that figured as cultivating the Cornland on the estate of Manlius, who received in kind a wage on which they could at least exist.
