The first act opens with a hurly-burly of tumult between the contending factions and the people. The finale is a tumultuous mass of sound, through which are heard the tones of trumpets and cries of the people. It is interrupted for a brief space by the ringing appeal of Rienzi "Erstehe, hohe Roma, neu," and then closes with an energetic andante, a quartet joining the choruses.
