Demos'thenes, famous for his bold and nervous style of oratory, flourished at Athens about 320 years before the Christian era. Taren'tum, now Taren'to, was a town of Calabria, in Italy, situate on a bay of the same name, near the mouth of the river Gale'sus: it was celebrated for its fine harbour.
