He was one of the Bridgewater treatise writers a group of distinguished persons endowed to produce tractates on Natural Theology and his work, The Adaptation of External Nature to the Moral and Intellectual Constitution of Man, was one of the most famous of that set, procuring for him a correspondence-membership from the French Institute and a D.C.L. from Oxford.
