In the island of Luzon, they have those of the province of Ylocos, some in Pangasinan, and all those of La Pampanga a large number of monasteries; while in the province of Manila and its vicinity they have others, which are flourishing. The Order of St. Dominic has the missions of the province of Cagayan, and others in the province of Pangasinan, where are many monasteries and visitas.

In many districts the religious make use, in their visitas, of certain of the natives who are clever and well instructed, so that these may teach the others to pray daily, instruct them in other matters touching religion, and see that they come to mass at the central missions; and in this way they succeed in preserving and maintaining their converts.

Beyond the rail fence the avenues of the bare woods were carpeted with the sere yellowish leaves that gave back the sunlight with a responsive illuminating effect, and thus the sylvan visitas glowed. The long slanting beams elongated his squatty little shadow till it was hardly a caricature.

The area is 4,699 square miles, and the population 200,753, distributed among 43 pueblos, 208 visitas, and 3 rancherias of subdued infieles. The capital is Catbalogan, population of 6,459, situated on the harbor and bay of like name on the west of the island 338 miles from Manila, and is the residence of the politico-military governor.

The Order of St. Augustine has many missions in the islands of Pintados and has established and occupied monasteries and various visitas.

Every Filipino has an innate inclination to abandon the hamlets and retire into the solitude of the woods, or live isolated in the midst of his own fields; and it is only the village prisons and the priests the salaries of the latter are proportionate to the number of their parishioners that prevent him from gradually turning the pueblos into visitas, and the latter into ranchos.

DON EDUARDO. Por supuesto.

From Borongan and its visitas twelve thousand pitchers of coconut oil are yearly exported to Manila, and the nuts consumed by men and pigs would suffice for at least eight thousand pitchers.

They also administer others about the city. The Order of St. Francis has some missions and monasteries about Manila, all the province of Camarines and the coast opposite, and La Laguna de Bay. These include many missions. The Society of Jesus has three large missions in the neighborhood of Manila, which have many visitas. They have good men, who are solicitous for the conversion of the natives.
