We should have to go back on our old road as far as Adab, then three days in the Wadi al Ain region, the same road near Haibel Gabrein, go on to Gaffit, and thence turn eastward to Sheher.

We were warned 'that our eyes should never be let to see Meshed again; we might camp before we got there, or after, as we wished, so were led by a roundabout way to Adab, and saw no more of the leprous seyyid who told such wondrous tales about the English king who once lived in Hagarein, and how the English, Turks, and Arabs were all descended from King Sam.

We know further that books under the title of Persian Adab were spread among those who sympathised with Mazdaism and Manichism in the circle of Moslem society. These books by their character were comparable to books on Mazdak but also to Kalila wa Dimna. In the former the heading is Fi taat us Sultan, in the latter Fi rasail.

The man who had moved was Diego and the boys could hear his cat-like footfalls as he neared their sleeping-places. Once he stumbled over one of the sleeping men and the aroused one rose with a start and called wildly: "What is it?" "Hush, Adab," cautioned Diego, "it is I Diego. I'm going to give an eye to those two American brats." "They're tied up hard and fast enough," chuckled the other.

At Adab they would not allow us to dip our vessels in their well, nor take our repast under the shadow of their mosque: even the women of this village ventured to insult us, peeping into our tent at night, and tumbling over the jugs in a manner most aggravating to the weary occupants. The soldiers had abandoned us and gone to sleep in the village.

These would correspond to the Antediluvian dynasty of Berossus, the last member of which was Xisuthros, the later counterpart of Ziusudu. In support of the exclusion of Nippur and Erech from the myth, it will be noted that the second city in the list is not Adab, which was probably the principal seat of the goddess Ninkharsagga, the fourth of the creating deities.

To the literary monuments go back a number of books on what is called Adab, good behaviour or agreeable manners, in modern Persian literature.

The intruder smiled quietly. "My name is Clarence Chugwater," he said simply. "Jugwater? Dod't doe you frob Adab. What do you want? If you're forb sub paper, I cad't see you now. Cub to-borrow bordig." "I am from no paper." "Thed you're wud of these photographers. I tell you, I cad't see you." "I am no photographer." "Thed what are you?" The other drew himself up.

I, however, reproduce below the Iranian subjects touched upon in these two Arabic books on adab in the Cairo editions. Iranian material from the Mahasin-wal masawi, Part I, p. 1. A dictum of Buzarjmahir. Interesting is the interpretation of the Persian word Mihman at another place in the same Arabic books, viz: MA, 79, 6 to 11=MM, 202, 16 to 203, 2.
