1° La première désigne sous le nom d'espèce la multitude des essences semblables entre elles. Ainsi l'espèce homme comprend la matière de tous les individus qui la composent; en d'autres termes, la multitude humaine se compose de la matière de Socrate, de celle de Platon, et des autres. Or, la matière est ce qui reçoit la forme. L'espèce homme reçoit-elle donc la socratité, Socrate est-il l'humanité socratique? non, c'est ce qu'il y a d'humanité, illud humanitatis, dans Socrate, qui reçoit la socratité, et non l'espèce humanité. L'espèce comprend ce qu'il y a d'humanité dans Socrate et dans tous les autres; elle comprend tous les analogues ou non-différents. Lorsqu'on dit que l'espèce est la matière affectée de toutes les formes individuelles, on n'entend pas que toutes les essences de l'espèce reçoivent en masse la forme d'un individu donné, mais qu'une seule d'entre elles, semblable de nature aux autres, analogue de composition élémentaire, et en ce sens non différente, indifférente, prend la forme qui l'individualise.
