Strange as this seems to us, it was but in keeping with the spirit of the time, which we call, perhaps with some presumption, the Dark Ages. The story which is probably the germ of this Dance was called Les Trois Morts et les Trois Vifs, "The Three Dead and the Three Living." It is of indefinable antiquity and uncertain origin.

More than once in my solitude, hidden beneath the blankets, I wiped tears from my eyes as I sensed the truth; yet he never knew, nor did I mean he should. I had no knowledge of the date, nor a very clear conception of where we were, although it must have been either the fourth or fifth day since we left Port du Morts.

We had not dreamed of finding white neighbors here, but our vicinity could be no secret to them, as long as there was an Indian in the neighborhood. So, delaying only for the soldiers to finish their breakfast, we pushed on for the "Butte des Morts," or, as Mrs. A always persisted in calling it, Betty More's.

"Norbert de Varenne," said he, "the poet, the author of 'Les Soleils Morts, a very expensive man. Every poem he gives us costs three hundred francs and the longest has not two hundred lines. But let us go into the Napolitain, I am getting thirsty." When they were seated at a table, Forestier ordered two glasses of beer.

"Section Bondy, Rue des Morts," he bade the driver. Madame sank into her seat again, in a state of agitation fully shared by mademoiselle. Rougane set himself to pacify and reassure them. The section would put the matter in order. They would most certainly be accorded a permit. What possible reason could there be for refusing them? A mere formality, after all!

Sometimes Malcourt whistled to himself, sometimes he sang in a variably agreeable voice, and now and then he quoted the poets, taking pleasure in the precision of his own diction. "C'est le jour des morts, Mirliton, Mirlitaine! Requiescant in pace!" he chanted; and quoted more of the same bard with a grimace, adding, as he spurred his horse: "Poeta nascitur, non fit! the poet's nasty and not fit.

VIII. Cold weather may be looked for from October 20 to October 29, and from November 10 to November 19; but in the first ten days of November comes what we call Indian summer, and the French L'Été des Morts, because it succeeds All-Souls' Day, or L'Été de Saint Martin. M. Quetelet adds no observations on December, it being presumably a cold month everywhere.

"C'est enfin que dans leurs prunelles Rit et pleure-fastidieux L'amour des choses eternelles Des vieux morts et des anciens dieux!" We were sitting around the camp fire, some thirty miles north of a place called Taqui, when Lawson announced his intention of finding a home. He had spoken little the last day or two, and I had guessed that he had struck a vein of private reflection.

Unless the world has changed, people will look at you. But you must not know it. Important, this is!... I could, of course, give you letters of introduction. "Les morts vont vite," it is true, and I am dead to that world, not wholly without the longings of a would-be revenant; but a ghost may still claim some privileges of memory, and my friends would be hospitable to you.

Jago, and under the raking fire of the Formidable. In this helpless state he continued to engage the enemy until, to use the French Admiral's words, his decks were jonché de morts.
