He is, one fancies, a bit disgusted and a bit despairing. But if it is despair, it is surely not the despair of one who has shirked the trial. The present book, Juventud, Egolatria, was written at the height of the late war, and there is a preface to the original edition, omitted here, in which Baroja defends his concern with aesthetic and philosophical matters at such a time.

When Maeztu, Azorin, Carlos del Rio and myself edited a modest magazine, by the name of Juventud, Azorin and I were the ones principally to be insulted. The experience was repeated later when we were both associated with El Globo. Azorin, perhaps, was attacked and insulted more frequently, so that I was often in a position to act as his champion.

The style of architecture of the houses with their thick walls and iron-barred windows makes the streets resemble those of other Spanish-American cities. Among the finest buildings of the city may be counted the palatial quarters of the young men's club "Casino de la Juventud" and of the Union Club, of which the most prominent men of the city, especially merchants, are members.
