Though the Bar-tailed Godwit goes far north to breed, not breeding much nearer than Lapland and the north of Norway and Sweden, both old and young soon show themselves again in the Channel Islands on their return journey, as I shot a young bird of the year in Herm the last week in August.

The Bar-tailed Godwit is included in Professor Ansted's list, but only marked as occurring in Guernsey. It is, however, as I have shown, perhaps more common in Herm, and it also occurs in Alderney. There is a series of these in the Museum in change and breeding-plumage.

"Then I shall send for you directly, Alberic, for I shall never love the Princes Carloman and Lothaire half as well as you!" "My Lord the King is waiting for the Duke," said a Frenchman, coming forward. "Farewell then, Fru Astrida. Do not weep. I shall soon come back. Farewell, Alberic. Take the bar-tailed falcon back to Montemar, and keep him for my sake.

"Why, its tail is a perfect comet," exclaimed Ellen, who had been for some time admiring it. She had given it the name by which it is chiefly known the Sappho comet, or bar-tailed humming-bird. It is a migratory bird, seldom, however, found so far north. It is a native of Bolivia, where it is found in gardens, and near the abodes of men, of whom it seems to have no fear.

The hen is of a more sombre hue, having an olive-green head, and the throat white, spotted with green. Proceeding southwards, we find numerous beautiful humming-birds in Bolivia. Among them is the sappho comet, or bar-tailed humming-bird. In winter it descends into the lowlands of Peru, among the abodes of men, visiting their gardens and orchards with perfect fearlessness.

BARTAILED GODWIT. Limosa lapponica, Linnaeus. French, "Barge rousse." The Bar-tailed Godwit is a regular and sometimes rather numerous spring and autumn visitant.

The bar-tailed hawk is quite well, and my mother will be here this evening; she let me ride on the instant we heard the news." "We rode long and late, and I was very weary," said Richard! "but I don't care, now we are at home. But I can hardly believe it! Oh, Alberic, it has been very dreary!" "See here, my Lord!" said Alberic, standing by the window.
