The generally accepted story of this expedition is as follows: Pe'lias, a descendant of AE'o-lus, the mystic progenitor of the Great AEol'ic race, had deprived his half-brother AE'son of the kingdom of Iol'cus in Thessaly. When Jason, son of AEson, had attained to manhood, he appeared before his uncle and demanded the throne.

Amid the rejoicings for the recovery of the golden Fleece, Jason felt that one thing was wanting, the presence of AESON, his father, who was prevented by his age and infirmities from taking part in them. Jason said to Medea, "My wife, I would that your arts, whose power I have seen so mighty for my aid, could do me one further service, and take some years from my life to add them to my father's."

But the songs say she cured AEson, Jason's father, and he became young, and strong again.

Just so, as Euripides tells us, Iolaus was transmogrified; and thus Phaon, for whom kind-hearted Sappho run wild, grew young again, for Venus's use; so Tithon by Aurora's means; so Aeson by Medea, and Jason also, who, if you'll believe Pherecides and Simonides, was new-vamped and dyed by that witch; and so were the nurses of jolly Bacchus, and their husbands, as Aeschylus relates.

Yet he must have had some good qualities, for his daughters loved him, and when they saw what Medea had done for Aeson, they wished her to do the same for their father. Medea pretended to consent, and prepared her caldron as before. At her request an old sheep was brought and plunged into the caldron.

Then AEson put down the lad, and whispered 'Fear not, but go in, and whomsoever you shall find, lay your hands upon his knees, and say, "In the name of Zeus, the father of Gods and men, I am your guest from this day forth." Then the lad went in without trembling, for he too was a hero's son; but when he was within, he stopped in wonder to listen to that magic song.
