I at last discovered that it was the white-throated sparrow, a common bird all through this region. Its song is very delicate and plaintive, a thin, wavering, tremulous whistle, which disappoints one, however, as it ends when it seems only to have begun. If the bird could give us the finishing strain of which this seems only the prelude, it would stand first among feathered songsters.
In one part of the wood, near what I took to be an old city reservoir, I came upon a single white-throated sparrow and a humming-bird, the latter a strangely uncommon sight in Tallahassee, where, of all the places I have ever seen, it ought to find itself in clover.

More interesting, even, than this flycatcher episode was an adventure one evening when I walked far out on a road, one side of which was deep woods, while the other was bordered by pasture and meadows. My object in going was to hear a white-throated sparrow, who often sang in that vicinity.

The first yellow-bellied woodpecker of the season was hammering in a tree over my head, and not far away was the first flock of white-throated sparrows. After breakfast I passed the place again, and the only bird to be found was one phoebe! Every company had its complement of chickadees.
