LXXVIII. When different opinions were expressed, they determined that those who, owing to age or ill health, were unserviceable for war, should depart from the town, and that themselves should try every expedient before they had recourse to the advice of Critognatus: however, that they would rather adopt that design, if circumstances should compel them and their allies should delay, than accept any terms of a surrender or peace.

But let us grant them all they suppose in this question, and even what they ought to be ashamed to suppose viz., that atoms are eternal, subsisting by themselves, independent from any other being, and consequently entirely perfect. SECT. LXXVIII. The Suppositions of the Epicureans are False and Chimerical. Must we suppose, besides, that atoms have motion of themselves?

Philosophic dogmas concerning the brevity and uncertainty of life were ancient even in the time of Herodotus. They have left their mark upon our language in the form of more than one proverb, but in none is this so patent as "the skeleton at the feast." In chapter lxxviii of Euterpe, we have an admirable citation.

For, truly, the knowledge and fulfilment of the first three and the last six Commandments depends altogether upon this Commandment; since parents are commanded to teach them to their children, as Psalm lxxviii. says, "How strictly has He commanded our fathers, that they should make known God's Commandments to their children, that the generation to come might know them and declare them to their children's children."

Are forgiveness, and chattel-making, synonymes? "I am their inheritance." Ezek. xliv. 28. "I will give thee the heathen for thine inheritance." Ps. ii. 8. "For the Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance." Ps. xciv 14. see also Deut. iv. 20; Josh. xiii. 33; Ps. lxxxii. 8; lxxviii. 62, 71; Prov. xiv. 8.

The word translated buy, is, like other words, modified by the nature of the subject to which it is applied. She named him Cain, that is bought. So in Isa. xi. 11. So Ps. lxxviii. 54. Here "bought" is not applied to persons reduced to servitude, but to those taken out of it. Prov. 8. 22. Prov. xix. 8. Finally, to buy is a secondary meaning of the Hebrew word Kana.

The inspired penman in Psalm lxxviii. 5, refers to the covenant transaction at Mount Sinai, where the "law" was exhibited as an appendix to the covenant of grace "added to the promise." How shall they know that he is their God? By the law? No, for that is a rule to all men. They know by the testimony as distinct from the law. Testimony consists of facts.

SECTION LXXVIII. Fifth side. Only a scroll is left; but, from the copy, we find it has been Honesty or Truth. Inscribed "HONESTATEM DILIGO." It is very curious, that among all the Christian systems of the virtues which we have examined, we should find this one in Venice only. The Truth of Spenser, Una, is, after Chastity, the most exquisite character in the "Faerie Queen."
