He was accompanied by Hugh James O'Beirne, former Councillor of the British Embassy at Petrograd, O.A. Fitz-Gerald, his military secretary, Brigadier-General Ellarshaw, and Sir Frederick Donaldson, all of whom were lost. The cause of the sinking of the Hampshire is not known.
