Officers of the New York Life Insurance Company testified that their company had given $50,000 to the Republican campaign of 1904. An item of $235,000, innocently charged to "Home office annex account," was traced to the hands of a notorious lobbyist at Albany. Three insurance companies had paid regularly $50,000 each to the Republican campaign fund.

Lord Wellington wrote, Sept. 19, 1809, that the French army of 225,000 men had 30,000 to 40,000 sick, which is 13.3 to 17.7 per cent. The French army in Portugal had at one time 64 per 1,000, and at another 235 per 1,000, and an average of 146 per 1,000, in the hospitals through the war.

Of a total of 235,604 male citizens of voting age in South Carolina in 1890, more than 102,000 of whom were white men, only 60,925 participated in the election of November 6, 1894, at which the members of the constitutional convention were elected. Of the number thus voting only 31,402 were counted in favor of holding the convention.

Five or six of the early Popes those who reigned about sixteen hundred years ago held their papal courts and advised with their clergy in the bowels of the earth. During seventeen years from A.D. 235 to A.D. 252 the Popes did not appear above ground. Four were raised to the great office during that period. Four years apiece, or thereabouts.

The following example, extracted from the Custom House reports, may elucidate this in a striking degree.
