For we used to say, "Qui est omnibu' princeps," not "omnibus princeps;" and "Vitâ illâ, dignu' locoquc," not "dignus." But if unlettered custom is such an artist of euphony, what must we think is required by scientific art and systematic learning?
Formerly it was esteemed an elegancy, though it would now be considered as a rusticism, to omit the s in all words which terminate in us, except when they were followed by a vowel; and the same elision which is so carefully avoided by the modern Poets, was very far from being reckoned a fault among the ancient: for they made no scruple to say, Qui est OMNIBU' princeps,
And boiling youth, when fast asleep, grows so warm with fancy, as in a dream to satisfy amorous desires: "Ut, quasi transactis saepe omnibu rebu, profundant Fluminis ingentes, fluctus, vestemque cruentent."
