While the Baptists and the Separatists were waging the battle for toleration and for religious liberty with the great weapon of their time, the pamphlet, the Consociated Churches were also making valiant use of it, not only in defense of the Establishment, but in controversial warfare among themselves, for in the New England of the second half of the eighteenth century, two schools of religious thought were slowly developing.
